Sphincter law
‘Ina May Gaskin, world-renowned midwife, has articulated a principle of childbearing she calls the sphincter law. Like the anal sphincter, the cervix is sensitive to outside influences, particularly to tension and a lack of privacy.
She humorously poses the question, “How well could you poop on demand, or without privacy, or on a timetable?” The sphincter law reinforces the delicacy of a woman’s responses in labor based on her.’
